Common signs to look out for

• Droppings: Small black rice-like pellets (mice) or thicker capsule-shaped droppings (rats), often found in food areas, cupboards, or along walls

• Scratching noises: Especially at night inside ceilings, under floors, and in walls

• Gnaw marks: Chewing on electrical cables, doors, plastic containers & food packaging (a major fire risk)

• Tracks and greasy smear marks: Dark oily trails along run routes where they repeatedly travel

• Burrows or nesting materials: Shredded paper, insulation, or fabrics hidden in quiet corners or roof spaces

• Strong ammonia smell: Mostly from urine in enclosed or rarely accessed areas

• Pet behaviour changes: Dogs or cats suddenly focused on a particular wall or cupboard

How they get in

• Gaps as small as 6–12 mm

• Open drains, roof spaces, broken vents, and pipe openings
